Magnesium is important in the synthesis and activation of vitamin D, serving as a cofactor in numerous enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism. Vitamin B12 is vital in supporting a healthy gut microbiome, which plays an important role in developing and functioning both inherent and adaptive immune systems.
This could be pivotal in restricting excessive immune reaction. Especially in COVID-19 patients with microbiota dysbiosis, which has been associated with severe diseases.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. There are different types of COPD. The most common type is chronic bronchitis, which is usually caused by smoking. COPD affects the lungs’ airways, making it hard to breathe. COPD can also cause wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness.
This study was done to see if a combination of Vitamin D, Magnesium, and B12 (DMB) could help people with COPD. 43 patients were studied, 17 in the DMB group and 26 in the control group. The two groups had different baseline characteristics, such as age.
Most patients received DMB within the first day of hospitalization with 4-7 days of treatment. Significantly fewer patients receiving DMB required oxygen therapy compared with controls.
On univariate analysis, increasing age and hypertension demonstrated significantly higher chances for oxygen therapy. However, exposure to DMB therapy significantly improved the need for oxygen therapy.
The study found that patients who received DMB had a lower chance of needing oxygen therapy or being admitted to the ICU than those who did not receive DMB.
Even though the study had limitations because of the small sample size, the control group being older, and having more comorbidities like diabetes, the benefits of DMB were still retained.
